SpruceUpNursery chooses to use products which will not harm the environment. Occasionally we need to control diseases and insects which transmit disease and chew holes in leaves and produce.
Our ^{first defense} ought to be using plants which are resistant to pests and disease. Healthy, vigorous plants will not be as likely to be damaged by insects and diseases.
Our ^{second defense} is to use repellents, and natural biological products; products which will specifically effect target pests without harming predators. Predators may be other insects as well as amphibians, reptiles, spiders, and birds.
 

A Balance of Wildlife and Insects,
Renders most outbreaks of insects tolerable.
I have had warblers, flycatchers and hummingbirds feeding on the aphids in my greenhouse. While the customers won't tolerate a single bug on their flowers, we won't tolerate killing birds which are innocently feeding on aphids. The solution? Spraying with a Safer soap spray, or JMS Stylet oil, a mineral oil, will kill aphids without harming birds. A Strong stream of water will knock pests off plants.
